In this article you will find some helpful tips on sensory development in your baby.
Is it necessary and why?
Italian scientist and physician Maria Montessori believed that every child has a great potential for development. The parents’ task is to create all the necessary conditions for its disclosure. What do you need? It is sensory development.
Sensory education is valuable because it:
– is the foundation for intellectual development;
– puts in order the chaotic ideas of a child received in the interaction with the outside world;
– develops observation;
– prepares for the real life;
– has a positive impact on the aesthetic sense;
– is the basis for the imagination development;
– develops attention;
– gives a child the opportunity to learn new objects and cognitive activities;
– provides mastering of sensory standards;
– provides the development of training activities skills;
– affects the vocabulary of the child;
– influences the development of visual, auditory, motor, and other types of memory.
When talking to your baby, support his head so he could view your face well. Human face attracts the baby. He likes to watch the movement of the mouth, tongue, to see how you close and open your eyes. Baby stares in your face as if he is about to ask you something.
A newborn baby is unable to focus his eyes on an object, so he has a periodic squint. Hang over your baby’s crib different objects (a rattle, a spoon, a ring) for him to focus his eyes on them first, and then to try to get them.
Mirrors attached to the head and along the sides of the baby’s crib will help expand the infant’s world. When the baby is lying on her tummy, put a chess board in front of him – black and white squares will help stare.
If a newborn screws up his eyes in bright light, and can not stare for a the long time, then in a month he watches a subject, and the eyeball movements are properly coordinated. You can improve your baby’s visual acuity in the following way:
- Put him into a dark room, and then turn the light on and off for a few times.
- When you are busy with your work, try to be always seen by your baby. Domestic scenes not only contribute to the development of the baby, but to his outlook as well.
A newborn better distinguishes contrast colours, such as black and white. And their view distance is only 20-25 cm, that is the distance to your face while breastfeeding. Only by four weeks the baby will be able to see you from the distance of 50 cm. Give your baby as black and white so colored toys and see what he prefers, and which ones he does not pay attention to.
Sing often to your baby. Sing quiet, slow and resonant, funny songs. Baby’s hearing needs intonation changes, teach him to pick up the difference between them.
Do not leave your baby in complete silence, even when he is sleeping. You do not need to tiptoe when he is sleeping, just remove a source of constant noise.
When a child is playing, put on the different music for him, and he will faster learn to turn his head toward the sound source and respond to different intonations.
Your baby should be familiar with the different sensations. Sew little bags of different fabrics: wool, silk, velvet, satin, and fill them with different cereals (buckwheat, peas, beans). These bags will train your baby’s touch.
Bright gloves will help your baby learn his hands better. Gloves’ color should differ from the clothes. Put them on the baby’s hands, and this would attract his attention and help develop the grasp reflex. To develop the grasp reflex let the baby firmly clutch at any object, and then slowly take it away.
After the birth babies want to be touched all the time. So you should often hug your baby, stroke, massage him. Babies also like contact with the skin – it can be just breastfeeding or holding them in the arms.
A young baby tends to taste any subject, because all five senses have the same meaning for him. Let your baby smell the cooking food, the flavors of the garden, flower-beds. Seasonings and spices, as well as the food that you give your baby help develop taste and smell.
When you start giving your baby solid food, let him decide what he likes. Some kids love green beans, and others do not even look at them – so the taste preferences determine. Never insist on your baby to eat – let him try new foods when he wants to. With ages, the baby’s tastes expand.
