How to Deal with Nausea and Vomiting during Pregnancy

    Nausea and vomiting is quite a normal state of a pregnant woman and it doesn’t have to be treated. There are lots of simple and not harmful ways to relieve the state of a mom-to-be. If toxicosis and vomiting severely torture a woman, the doctor sure will prescribe some medications and will give her an option to undergo treatment in a hospital. My friend was in such a situation. She was suffering from an extremely severe vomiting, she couldn’t eat a thing, she was so much exhausted and skinny. A doctor found a high level of acetone in her blood. So, she had to spend some time in a hospital, and the doctor told her to drink much water a day. Water took acetone out of her body and vomiting stopped torturing her.

    Particuliarities of toxicosis

    Your relationship with toxemia during pregnancy will vary: some symptoms will gradually fade, but many new ones will appear. Some women, for example, have absolutely all dairy products intolerance within the first half of pregnancy period, and after 6 months they may start eating some yogurt.

    Nausea and vomiting are of course unpleasant. Still, after this short “process” a woman feels a significant relief. But changes in the lifestyle depress you very much: if before pregnancy, you used to be active and cheerful, the constant desire to lie on a sofa, lethargy and apathy then can be quite annoying.

    Ways of toxicosis management are many. For example, mint has a sufficiently strong choleretic effect, and calms down your stomach and intestines that relieves severity of nausea and vomiting. But by the end of your pregnancy (and an “early toxicosis” may last longer) the foods, containing mint, significantly enhance heartburn because they relax the esophagus and stomach.

    What and how should you eat when suffering from vomiting and toxemia?

    When you wake up in the morning, still being in the bed eat a dry cracker, several raisins or dried apricots. During the day be sure to have a snack as often as you require so as you do not feel nausea right in a subway or in a bus. You will avoid nausea if you smell or suck a lemon: put two or three slices of lemon in a plastic container and always carry it in your bag. If you can’t tolerate a lemon, sour drinks of cranberry or cowberry will help you.

    Eat often, but in small portions. When your stomach is empty for a long time, gastric acid starts digesting its own “content”, this can also cause nausea.

    Avoid foods and smells that make you feel bad. You better leave the kitchen where fish is being cooked, no need to show your good manners this moment. Don’t worry, the hosts won’t be offended.

    Every day, drink plenty of fluids, especially if you suffer from frequent vomiting attacks. Fruit and berry juices, mineral water (better still), green tea (rather weak), light and fresh vegetarian vegetable soup will make you feel much better. But sometimes fluids are the reason of vomiting, especially if you used to wash down your meal with some liquid. In this case, you should drink and eat separately; that’s a very good habit at all times. You should drink between meals.

    Recipe of the soup. The water is boiling, throw some potatoes in it, carrots, green beans, a zucchini or some cauliflower and cook the veggies until they get soft. You can decorate your soup with a small amount of fresh greens and grated cheese.

    Don’t make any sudden movements after meals – do not get out of the bed right after you had your morning snack in it, do not bend after eating. Here’s one more trick: after you eat, you need to stay upright for a while, because when you sit and lie down the food does not go down but upwards resulting in nausea.

    Talk with your doctor about taking some supplements for pregnancy: they will help you to replenish the amount of vitamins and nutrients you don’t get when “dieting” because of your nausea. If you have food allergies, your doctor will also set a diet plan for you so as your baby not to have any allergy too.

    Dairy roducts increase your sickness

    You don’t have to force yourself to eat cheese and drink milk because your baby needs calcium. Your body will get the necessary amount of calcium and other nutrients from other products and nutritional supplements. Moreover, recent studies say that problems with the teeth in pregnant women and nursing moms are mostly a result of improper care and malnutrition, not to mention heredity that still plays a greater role.

    What else causes sickness and vomiting?

    There are many other aspects of everyday life, which can make your unpleasant feelings more severe.

    When suffering from toxicosis you should not use any perfumes, deodorants, strongly scented shower gels and scented soap. You may have to stop using any lipstick and lip gloss, which can worsen your feelings as well.

    If you feel sick in a car or you dislike the smell of gasoline, change of vehicle (bus, trolleybus, tram) may solve the problem. In this case, always stay in the front part of the vehicle for the back part is always swayed stronger. Subways are not swayed, but it is very stuffy there and you may feel psychologically uncomfortable.

    If you planned home repair and circumstances don’t allow you to do without any repairs, better postpone it until your sickness fades: unpleasant odors will make you feel much worse, not to mention the fact that it is very harmful for the baby.
